I'm seeking to home school our daughter (age 5), and need to know of
some free, christian, online resources, where I can teach my daughter
from step by step online lessons.

Also, can someone please direct me to where I may find what are the
requirements and expectations of someone who completes grade K? What
should a student who successfully completes K know?

My e-mail address is a working one. Please e-mail me to let me know.

Thank you

You may have trouble finding something like that for free. Do you need a
complete curriculum? Are there certain subjects you need help with?
There are a lot of good free resources, but something that holds your
hand step by step will cost you.

No. Such a list cannot possibly exist. Every child is unique. If you
really need this kind of list to use as a guide, you local public school
district can provide you with a scope and sequence. Give it a good read,
then toss it out.

What should a student who successfully completes K know?
What do you want to teach her? What is she ready to learn?

What you really need to do is re-think your approach to education. It
looks like you expect to pubic school her at home. Don't do that.

Here is a good resource to get you started:

Homeskoolas need help with ALL subjects.

They are not qualified to teach ANY of them. ;-)

In addition to the great answer Scott provided (in the usenet group), I
might add that you should let us know what state you reside. Every state
has different requirements.

Note that one of the common things new homeschoolers do is to try to
duplicate "public school at home". Some folks continue this throughout,
but most who stick with homeschooling quickly abandon that approach. That
makes sense - after all, the methods used for a large group setting are
often used out of necessity, not because they are the "best".

I'm looking for a christian site that has considered the fact you are
home schooling your christian child, and which has put some step by
step curriculum up to that end.
At this point, your question is not answerable.

I tried to get to this in my first answer, but I don't think you
understood what I was saying. Last July, our homeschool association gave
a "FAQs of homeschooling" - the topic I had to cover was curriculum
choices....

My opening segment went something like this:
Curriculum is one of the first things new homeschoolers begin thinking
about, and IS the first thing they get bogged down with. Sadly, this also
causes many new homeschoolers to give up and go back to the things society
tells to do (public or private school).

The fact is, there are THOUSANDS of curriculums out there. And the honest
truth is that which one you pick to start out with really does not matter.

That's worth repeating - IT DOES NOT MATTER.

It's certainly not worth the worry and pressure parents put themselves
under. For starters, what you start with almost certainly won't be the
one you are using a year from now. Imho, curriculums are like toilet
paper - yeah, some are better than others, but in the end, they all will
get the job done.

Point #1: so what is most important?
Answer is to develop the proper relationship between you and your child.
Quite frankly, if your child has never been in corporate education (or day
care), this should be fairly easy. But if they have already been in
public or private school, it is better to cut back on the academic
curriculum work in order to develop that proper relationship.

Point #2 goes back to what I was saying earlier: be flexible in curriculum
choices. Think of it as "try it and if it doesn't work, move on".
What's more, what works well for a child in Kindegarden and 1st grade,
only very rarely works well for that same child in 5th & 6th grade, and
even less so in 11th & 12th.

Point #3: There are some questions you need to answer BEFORE picking a
curriculum:
What is your child's learning style? visual, audial, or kinetic?
Using what teaching style? "public school at home"? unschooling? Unit
study?
What state are you in? There may be particular requirements.
Are you looking for a unified curriculum (ie. 1 program for all subjects)
or a seperate curriculum that is only a single topic?

misc.education.home-school.christian FAQ (Revised 2006)

If you are a Newbie on misc.education.home-school.christian and have any
intelligence or a different opinion to the people there ...or WORSE STILL
... you are an actual PROFESSIONAL TEACHER!!(HORROR!!!) ...then the
following will be your treatment:

1 - Repeated ad hominem attacks ...called "troll" etc

2 - Character assassination .....you are always wrong ...they are always
correct ...no discussion on this matter as it is the 11th Commandment of
Home Skooling

3 - Irrational inquisition / witch hunt followed by crucifixion / stoning /
burning at the stake .........they like that "Old Time Religion"!!!

4 - Thinking and critical reflection are capital offences ...some are not
capable of doing one or the other ....some are not capable of doing
either!!!

5 - Don't ask questions ... if you ask questions then you looking for
information to discredit home skooling ...and trying to FORCE them ... to
THINK!!! ...it's being worldly!!! ...you can't be a "Trew Kristyun"!!!! ...
this is a conspiracy ... not that they are paranoid ...much ...and anyway
the medication keeps them sane ... most of the time ... perhaps ... maybe
... oh
well ... just talk about the fun playing with kids .. and acting like kids
....and how wonderful home skoooling is ... go away ... trouble maker ....oh
.... by the way ... wecome to misc.education.home-school.christian ...we are
a friendly bunch ... believe it ...OR ELSE!!!!

FAQ answered by the NG members:

* Will I find anything of worth regarding education on this NG that I don't
already know because I attended school once ...a long time ago?

No ... not really ...what's education???? ...we only home skool ..."we don't
need no education, we don't need no thought control ...teacher, leave us
kids alone"... go away ... I'm playing with my kids!!!

* Will I have an intelligent logical ratrional conversation with any person
on this NG?

Maybe ... but only a very few seem capable of doing so ... you can count
them on one hand ... which is good for home skool maths! ... now bugger off
.... I'm playing with my kids!

* Is this NG plagued by Trew Kristyuns?

No ... "Trew Kristyuns" are not a plague ... just a very horrible disease
... let us show you how much we luv you ...really ... we just have to
collect the wood for the fire ... and the petrol for the fuel ... and the
rope to .... oh well ... you don't need to know about that right now
...bugger off ....I'm playing with my kids!

* Is his group friendly?

Yes, to our own kind ...unfortunately you are the Other .... an outsider ...
because of this you will be treated to our friendly "Trew Kristyun luv"
(complete with pithy proof text from the bible) ... this is because you are
inferior and the lowest of the low ... only home skoolers are able to access
the wisdom of God .... only home skoolers know everything in the universe
about education ... and only home skoolers can get their heads that far up
their arses ...so there!! ...now bugger off! ...go away! ...still got to do
more playing with my kids ...I mean more 'Trew Home Skooling Ejakashun"

..... you STILL here? ...... bugger off! ... I'm off to perform more
witchdoctory and diy brain surgery

Surgery isn't something for professionals only. Anyone can do it. It's
just carving up meat.

Us DIY surgeons don't want any government interference with our surgery.
Its our kids we are operating on and we know what's best for the little
buggers. I own my kids so I can experiment on them as I wish. I especially
like experiements using electricty, bare wires and a power socket.

I went to hospital once so I know everything about DIY brain surgery. I've
also watched a lot of soap operas about hospitals. I've read several DIY
brain surgery books and even attended several DIY brain surgery seminars.
Its very easy to do brain surgery as it comes naturally to everyone.

Everyone is born with the ability to do brain surgery because everyone can
use a knife. I use a knife every day to cut up my own food and my kid's
food. That proves that I'm qualified to do DIY brain surgery.

Scalpel? I don't need a scapel. I've got a steak knife and its sharp
enough. If it doesn't cut through I can always use the chain saw.

Anaesthetic? That's just fancy professional doctor stuff. You don't need
it. You just hit the kid over the head with your steel reinforced KJV
bible. That knocks 'em out.

If you really know your child well you can just ask where it hurts, open up
their head, operate and stitch it back up with some cotton and a few safety
pins. It works just as good as that fancy medical professional stuff.

I don't need to assess or diagnose whether DIY brainsurgery is needed or
not. I like doing it and the kids turn out a whole lot better after I'm
finished. I just ask Junior "You got a headche, Junior?" or "Are you
thinking again?" and if Junior's head wobbles or Junior's head is a bit pale
I operate.

What's really neat is that you can use the leftovers for a family casserole
meal. The kids love it! Great big juicy brain blobs deep fried! Yummy!

Here we go!

Oops!

Made a mistake!

Better take them to a DIY brain surgery hospital.

Oops!

The DIY brain surgery hospital made a mistake!

Better send the kids to a real hospital with professional doctors who know
what they are doing.

Oops!

Too late!

The kids are dead.

Oh well ...

Time to make some more kids so I can continue my career as a DIY surgeon.

This actually doesn't mean much. Bob Jones Uni is a fundamentalist

.... http://www.itib.org/

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Testimony To An Infallable Bible
The church today is contending against an enemy-one cloaked in the guise of
truth and relevance. Ecumenical alliances sound the siren song of unity,
which in itself is desirable and biblical but frequently sacrifices biblical
fidelity to reach that end. The emotionalism so prevalent in modern churches
produces much heat but all too often neglects the light of God's Word. The
secular world, with its seductive refrain of "tolerance" presents itself as
compatible with biblical Christianity. The resurgence of Neo-Paganism and
New Age ideologies promises greater peace and power, yet only echoes the
age-old hollow promises Satan made to Eve. Now, more than ever, it is time
to proclaim the profound differences between the counterfeits and the
eternal truth of God's Word. This is what the International Testimony to an
Infallible Bible (or "ITIB") is all about.
The ITIB started a number of years ago when several men were having dinner
together while attending Bible Conference at Bob Jones University. In the
course of the conversation, someone mentioned how timely it would be to have
a congress which Fundamentalists from around the world could attend to
receive inspiration, instruction, encouragement, and fellowship. A committee
was formed, and in June of 1976 the World Congress of Fundamentalists was
held in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was intended to be a one-time affair;
however, those who attended were so encouraged and blessed they requested
that another such meeting be held.
Since that date over sixteen congresses (whether global or regional in
scope) have been sponsored by the ITIB. The global or World Congresses are
held about every ten years, while regional congresses are held every year or
two in different locations around the globe.
The ITIB is co-chaired by Dr. Ian Paisley (member of the European
Parliament; Pastor of Martyrs Memorial Free Presbyterian Church, Belfast,
Northern Ireland) and Dr. Bob Jones III (President of Bob Jones University,
Greenville, South Carolina, USA). The ITIB Committee is comprised of both
ministers and laymen who meet occasionally to help guide the direction of
the ITIB. Encouraging fidelity to the Bible is their overriding concern for
the ITIB.
It is amazing how far error, posing as truth, has advanced, taking control
of so many churches and Christian institutions throughout the world. It is
our prayer that the truth of biblical separation from all error, when
understood and practiced by the pastors around the world, will reveal the
dark and dangerous situation in which the church finds itself today.
A College That's Strictly Different
Secretive Pensacola Christian controls student life with tough regulations
and unwritten rules
By THOMAS BARTLETT
Pensacola, Fla.
...
Pensacola Christian College prides itself on being different, not just from
secular colleges, but from fellow Christian ones, too.
.....
Lisa Morris was walking to class with her boyfriend last October when
something happened. At first Ms. Morris, a sophomore music major, is
reluctant to divulge the details. Eventually, however, the truth comes out:
He patted her behind.
Someone who witnessed the incident reported Ms. Morris and her boyfriend. At
Pensacola any physical contact between members of the opposite sex is
forbidden. (Members of the same sex may touch, although the college condemns
homosexuality.) The forbidden contact includes shaking hands and definitely
includes patting behinds. Both students were expelled.
....
Even couples who are not talking or touching can be reprimanded. Sabrina
Poirier, a student at Pensacola who withdrew in 1997, was disciplined for
what is known on the campus as "optical intercourse" - staring too intently
into the eyes of a member of the opposite sex. This is also referred to as
"making eye babies." While the rule does not appear in written form, most
students interviewed for this article were familiar with the concept.
.....
There are plenty of other ways to run afoul of the rules. Last spring
Timothy Dow was caught playing the video game Halo 2. Such games are banned
by the college. Movies are also forbidden, including those rated G. Music is
restricted to classical or approved Christian ("contemporary Christian"
artists are deemed too worldly). Students are allowed to watch television
news at 6 o'clock, but that's it. The TVs are controlled by college
employees, who flip a switch to black out the commercials, lest students see
anything inappropriate.
In the library, books and magazines are censored. One student says she saw a
pair of black-marker boxer shorts on a photograph of Michelangelo's David.
Any books that students wish to read that are not in the library must first
be approved by administrators. Those containing references to "magic," for
instance, are normally rejected. The rule book specifically prohibits
"fleshly magazines and books."
......
Along with the college, Mr. Horton founded A Beka Books, acknowledged as the
largest Christian-textbook company in the world. A Beka sells textbooks to
more than 10,000 Christian schools across the country, offering a complete
curriculum for kindergarten through 12th grade. It has also won a big share
of the lucrative home-school market.
The company brings in about $70-million in annual revenue and is valued at
$280-million, according to Dun & Bradstreet. A sizable chunk of that revenue
goes to support the college, which does not come close to breaking even on
its own. According to its 2003 tax filing, the university collected
$20-million in tuition and fees and $3-million from contributions. The
filing attributes $15-million in income to "royalties," presumably from A
Beka.
In the mid-90s, A Beka paid nearly $50-million in back taxes after the
Internal Revenue Service ruled that it should have been classified as a
for-profit entity. The college itself remains nonprofit.
Revenue from A Beka helps keep costs extremely low. Students pay $6,000 a
year for tuition, room, and board. That's about a third or a quarter of what
most other Christian colleges cost. When asked what other colleges they
considered, Pensacola students often mention Bob Jones, Cedarville
University, Northland Baptist Bible College, and Abilene Christian
University. Cost is usually cited as the deciding factor.
Just as the textbook company helps support the college, the college helps
support the textbook company. Many of Pensacola's students work for A Beka,
operating binding equipment, packing books into boxes, loading those boxes
onto forklifts. Some students complain about the working conditions; others
say it's a good deal. For women, A Beka is usually the only employment
option because they are not allowed to hold off-campus jobs. Or leave the
campus alone, for that matter.
In the world of Christian colleges, Pensacola is an oddity. It is not a
member of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. It has little
to do with other institutions. Several administrators at other Christian
colleges declined to discuss Pensacola on the record for fear of seeming
critical. One said he did not know enough to speak knowledgeably because
Pensacola keeps mostly to itself.
While not wanting to criticize Pensacola, Carl A. Ruby, vice president for
student life at Cedarville, in Ohio, emphasizes that his university doesn't
take the "bad-kid approach" to discipline. "On major issues of Christian
doctrine, we are probably always on the same page," he writes in an e-mail
message. "In terms of living out our faith on a daily basis, significant
differences emerge."
....
Creationism is taught in science courses.
....
Several previously unaccredited Christian colleges, like Bob Jones, have
recently become candidates for accreditation. Pensacola, however, has shown
no interest in outside approval of any kind. Nor does it advertise its
unaccredited status. A search of the Web site turns up no mention of
accreditation. It is not mentioned in the college's viewbook either, which
dedicates four pages to sports activities and two to campus facilities.
....
Lack of accreditation has been a problem for Amy Brown, too. She graduated
from Pensacola in 2003 with a degree in early-childhood education. But
because the college is not accredited, she cannot teach in public schools,
she says. She had no idea what accreditation was before enrolling at
Pensacola. "I never tried to transfer," she writes in an e-mail message,
"because I had friends that did and ended up with all of their credits as
electives," meaning that they had to retake required courses.
Mr. Ghobrial, the student from Egypt who doesn't mind the rules, wants to
attend dental school. His first choice, West Virginia University, has
already said it would not consider his application, because Pensacola is not
accredited. "I'm hoping they change their minds," he says.
Many Christian colleges do accept Pensacola's credits, as do some secular
institutions. Several former students say they have had no difficulty
transferring credits or applying for jobs. But others have. And as more
states crack down on degrees from unaccredited colleges, it may get even
tougher for Pensacola graduates.
ROBINSON SELF-TEACHING HOME SCHOOL CURRICULUM
- TOTALLY dependent upon good literacy skills to begin with.
- Lock-step without any deviation from the program.
- 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica used - outdated and too complicated for
younger readers
- 1913 Webster's Dictionary used - outdated and too complicated for younger
readers
- Science texts instead of hands on experimentation and disvcovery learning.
- Original King James Version of the Bible - outdated and language too
complicated for any child of any age
-Phonics only without the addition of whole language approach, etc.
- Claims to be "self-teaching" but pupils require interaction with at least
one other person - a teacher.
This "box:" is the lazy person's way of homeschooling and not worth the
money you will outlay for it.
2 passages immeadiately come to mind:
Isaiah 5:20 - Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put
darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and
sweet for bitter!
Matthew 7:13-14 - Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad
is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.
Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life,
and there are few who find it.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF A FUNDAMENTALIST
... quoting from James Barr's book "Fundamentalism" on the three
distinguishing features of the Fundamentalist:
'Firstly, a fundamentalist has a very strong emphasis on the inerrancy of
the Bible, and believes in the absence from it of any sort of error.
Two, a strong hostility to modern theology and to the methodf, results and
implications of modern critical study of the Bible.
And three, an assurance that those who do not share their religious
viewpoint are not really true Christians at all.'
Diana, I agree that Mark may well be a "good man" and could be a "good
friend", my problem is how he chooses to interact with the world.
There is no doubt that he is in pain, but to take up residence in a
Christian Homeschool newsgroup and spend his time taking pot-shots at
Christianity and Homeschooling seems the opposite of the actions of a "good"
anything. Then to complain that you've been made to feel "unwelcome", ask
for debate but ignore questions and just cut/paste cheap shots at the locals
(under the banner of satire no less) are hardly actions that will lead to
him being thought of as a "good friend".
On top of that, he claims to be an adult educator yet does the opposite of
what he was taught in his training. As an example of "professional"
educators his behaviour leads homeschoolers to become even less likely to
interact with the general school movement!
Or to take any notice of him.
What is a fundamentalist?
They are characterised by one or more of the following:
- an extreme lack of rationality
- fondness of logical fallacies
- repeated use of emotional appeals
- rigid adherence to Bronze Age mythology
- endorsement of pseudoscientific nonsense
- bigotry and discriminatory attitudes towards minority groups
- belief that certain children's media is the work of Satan
- propensity to post Bible verses instead of valid argument.
They have the following unfortunate features:
- a distrust and fear of freedom
- a belief in the importance of authority and in controlling what people
believe
- a corresponding preference for obedience rather than love
- a desire to give people what they want rather than the truth
- a refusal to allow themselves to be in the least disconcerted when
confronted with the true nature of their fundamentalist religion
- a readiness to persecute and exclude anyone who is of a different
persuasion.
They prefer authority, obedience, and conformity over freedom, truth, and
dissent.
MEHSC MOBERATOR WARNING
Dear Trew Homeskoola Scott Bryce
I am refreshed and challenged by your unique point of view. You make silence
a wonderful thing to look forward to. However I took exception to your
recent homeskool scribble.
It was:
[X] Illiterate
[X] Irrational
[X] Uninformed
[X] Written with a blunt crayon that had been stuck up someone's nose
[X] Written on a slate covered with puke
[X] Written on both sides of used toilet paper
Your attention is drawn to the fact that:
[X] You contradicted professional educators who know far more about
education than you will ever know in several lifetimes
[X] You contradicted yourself several times
[X] You agreed with infamous internet kook Steve Winter
[X] You mindlessly dribbled and belched several times
[X] You repeatedly assumed unwarranted spiritual, moral, intellectual and /
or educational
superiority
[X] You mentioned nothing about real education but waffled on about
homeskool ratbaggery and DIY amateur experimentation on children
[X] You keep talking to yourself in Homeskoolese
It is recommended that you:
[X] Devote your life to homeskooling in Iraq and Afghanistan.
[X] Get an education
[X] Learn how to spell
[X] Stop your abusive DIY amateur experimentation on children
[X] Start up a Homeskool Klown Skool
[X] Pay the standard $100 (Aus) Abuse Fine to the Moberator for your
childish fearfilled abusive homeskool behaviour
QUESTIONS TO UNDERSTAND YOU BETTER:
[X] Are you from the shallow end of the gene pool?
[X] Do you want fries with that?
Please save this message and review it occasionally to determine your
progress toward being;
[X] a tolerable homeskoola
[X] a fully-functional human being
[X] integrated into humanity
[X] re-integrated into the wild
If what you don't know can't hurt you, you're practically invulnerable.
You are hereby WARNED that future posting in the manner outlined above may
void your standing as a MESHC Member and you will have to reapply.
Thank you for taking the time to read this warning.
English
Talking and Listening n Reading n Writing
Students mix and talk informally with peers, teachers and known adults. They
give short talks and interact effectively in the classroom and in groups.
Students listen with attentiveness to follow simple instructions and ask
relevant questions. They express ideas clearly, demonstrating an emerging
awareness of how people use spoken language for different purposes. They
explore the way familiar spoken texts are constructed and the features
of these texts. Students develop reading, viewing and comprehension skills
and strategies
using context, grammar, word usage and phonics in short predictable printed
texts on familiar topics. They recognise, discuss and respond to the
different kinds and purposes of various written and visual texts. Students
explore and identify some language features of written and visual texts.
Students write with an increasing awareness of the nature, purpose and
conventions of written language. They produce simple texts that demonstrate
an awareness of the basic grammar and punctuation needed. Students know and
use letters and sounds of the alphabet to attempt to spell known words and
use most lower and upper case letters appropriately to construct sentences.
Students explore the use of computer technology to
construct texts.
Mathematics
Working Mathematically n Number n Patterns and Algebra n Measurement and
Data n Space and Geometry
Students ask questions and explore mathematical problems. They use everyday
language, materials and informal recordings to demonstrate understanding and
link mathematical ideas. Students count to 30 and represent numbers to 20
with objects, pictures, numerals and words and read and use ordinal numbers
to at least 'tenth' place. They manipulate objects to model addition and
subtraction, multiplication and division. Students divide objects into two
equal parts and describe them as halves. They recognise coins and notes.
Students recognise, describe and continue patterns that increase or
decrease. Students identify length, area, volume, capacity and mass and
compare and arrange objects according to these attributes. They name the
days of the week and the seasons and they order events in a
school day, telling the time on the hour. Students use objects and pictures
to create a data display and interpret data. Students manipulate, sort and
describe 3D objects using everyday language. They manipulate, sort and
describe 2D shapes, identifying circles, squares, triangles and rectangles.
Students give and follow simple directions and describe position using
everyday language.
Science and Technology
Investigating Scientifically n Designing and Making n The Natural
Environment n The Made Environment
Students explore their immediate environment by using the senses,
questioning, sharing ideas and identifying simple causeand-effect
relationships. They identify and safely use some equipment to explore.
Students explore ideas, manipulate materials and trial designs through play
to develop products and built environments. They identify and safely use
some equipment and computer-based technology to model and make things.
Students identify and group living and non-living things and recognise the
different needs of living things. They recognise different forms of energy
and identify its use in daily life. Students
identify ways in which the environment influences daily life. They explore
the properties of both natural and made materials. Students identify ways in
which familiar products, including information products, services and built
environments meet the needs of people. They recognise the different ways
that information is sent and received and how these influence communication.
Students identify the characteristics of a range of materials used to make
commonly available products and built environments.
Human Society and Its Environment
Change and Continuity n Cultures n Environments n Social Systems and
Structures
Students identify personally significant events, places and people and
compare these with those of their peers. They use language associated with
time, change and place. Students examine characteristics common to people,
including Aboriginal peoples, describing some of the similarities and
differences. They acquire information by direct observation, talking to
others, and by viewing, reading and listening to texts. Students identify
and explore familiar natural and built environments, how to care for them
and the activities that occur in them. They communicate knowledge and
understanding orally, through writing and drawing, and by constructing
models. Students identify people's needs and explain how these are met
individually and cooperatively. They explore roles, responsibilities and
rules in the classroom and at home.
Creative Arts
Visual Arts n Music n Drama n Dance
Students make pictures and other artworks using the media and materials
given, representing both real and imagined situations. They appreciate that
artists make artworks and they begin to describe some aspects of artworks.
Students sing, play and move to a range of music. They experiment with
sounds and begin to organise them into basic structures. Students listen and
respond to a variety of music. Students engage in roles through imaginative
play and dramatic situations. They use movement, spaces and objects to
dramatise personal experiences. They respond to different forms of dramatic
experiences. Students perform dances with some control over body movement
and expression. They respond to a range of stimuli, drawing from experience
and imagination, exploring the notion that dance is about moving the body to
express ideas. Students watch dance performances and begin to recognise some
basic components of dance.
Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
Fundamental Movement and Physical Activity n Healthy Choices n Self and
Relationships
Students participate in regular physical activity through creative play,
dance, gymnastics and minor games. They practise body movement and control,
demonstrating different ways the body can move by composing and sequencing
simple movement patterns. Students show awareness and consideration of
others during play situations and practise the fundamental movement skills
of balance, sprint run, vertical jump and catch. They describe the
components of an active lifestyle and identify different ways to be active
at school and at home. Students make simple decisions in relation to health
and safety and identify
medicines and how to store them. They describe balanced eating habits and
healthy personal habits as well as safe and unsafe situations at home, on
and near roads, travelling to and from school and near water. Students
identify people who can help and describe actions such as 'no, go, tell'
that might be taken in unsafe situations. Students identify personal
characteristics and qualities, and physical changes that have occurred since
birth and identify different parts of the body. With self-control, students
express feelings and develop positive relationships. They interact and
communicate with peers in a variety of play and group situations, listening,
sharing and showing concern when working with others.
"As rare as a homeschooler who loves professional teachers."
Hi Mark,
My Grandson age 10 has been homeschooled since kindergarden because the
school said they did not want to deal with him and his Hyperactivity. They
wanted to expel him just for getting his sleeves wet when washing his hands
after using the bathroom. They did not show for meetings with my daughter
that they themselves set up and she had to get points by taking days off
work and then they didn't have the courtesy to show up. I also like
homeschooling him because our schools do not let kids pray over their meals
or anything here where I live. They don't say the Pledge anymore. They teach
evolution and against creation. I am very happy with him being homeschooled
and in his IQ test he scored 135 and that was in third grade. Honor Roll all
three years as he is in fourth grade this year. Can read college books and
has read since before age 1.
Honey, guess I and my daughter are fools because we love the homeschooling
program. It is the best things since potato chips LOL.
As for interacting with other children we have programs at some of our
YMCA's that have physical education for home schooled children and then my
Grandson goes to church and we have hundreds of children in his class there.
He watches Jepardy and even answers alot before the adults do. He watchs the
Weather Channel all the time and even puts it on DVR. He watches all things
educational and he does this on his own not because we make him or ask him
or ask him to. He just loves to learn. Today my hubby and my daughter took
him to the Library where he loves to go and got him about ten books he
wanted to read but only needed one for his assignment in school.
Anyways just my two cents worth.
Do you still love me? :-D
Honey, guess I and my daughter are fools because we love the homeschooling
It depends on HOW you homeschool.
Homeschooling can be good for the child when done well.
This means some sort of educational oversight to ensure that the child is
getting at least a basic education. That does happen in all states of
Australia but not all states in the USA.
At first it was all paperwork and a little basic computer. As he advanced in
grade the computer became more. The school program he is on has a teacher he
talks to by phone and email and also students. Last year they called it
"Illuminate Sessions" where the teacher did phone conference with all the
students on some subjects.
This year they have this daily where the teacher talks with the students.
He has Science projects he does and sends to the teacher by snail mail. His
written work is sent by email or to the teacher via snail mail.
In the first couple years he had to read to the teacher short books over the
phone and he reads so fast they had to ask him to slow down LOL.
The curriculum has to pass our counties Board of Education first. She had to
have written permission from our board of Ed to even do this.
Tell Bev hi for me. Give her a hug too :-)
What FOOL would "educate" their Kindergarten aged child via computer???!!!!
Have you ANY idea what is required to teach this age group????? NO!!!!!
WHAT YOU ARE SEEKING TO DO IS CHILD ABUSE!!!!!
Unlike fools such as yourself as a professional educator I know what to
teach and how to teach it.
HOW will you address the following???????
From
http://k6.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/foundation_statements/pdf_doc/foundation_statements_es1.pdf
English
Talking and Listening n Reading n Writing
Students mix and talk informally with peers, teachers and known adults. They
give short talks and interact effectively in the classroom and in groups.
Students listen with attentiveness to follow simple instructions and ask
relevant questions. They express ideas clearly, demonstrating an emerging
awareness of how people use spoken language for different purposes. They
explore the way familiar spoken texts are constructed and the features
of these texts. Students develop reading, viewing and comprehension skills
and strategies
using context, grammar, word usage and phonics in short predictable printed
texts on familiar topics. They recognise, discuss and respond to the
different kinds and purposes of various written and visual texts. Students
explore and identify some language features of written and visual texts.
Students write with an increasing awareness of the nature, purpose and
conventions of written language. They produce simple texts that demonstrate
an awareness of the basic grammar and punctuation needed. Students know and
use letters and sounds of the alphabet to attempt to spell known words and
use most lower and upper case letters appropriately to construct sentences.
Students explore the use of computer technology to
construct texts.
Mathematics
Working Mathematically n Number n Patterns and Algebra n Measurement and
Data n Space and Geometry
Students ask questions and explore mathematical problems. They use everyday
language, materials and informal recordings to demonstrate understanding and
link mathematical ideas. Students count to 30 and represent numbers to 20
with objects, pictures, numerals and words and read and use ordinal numbers
to at least 'tenth' place. They manipulate objects to model addition and
subtraction, multiplication and division. Students divide objects into two
equal parts and describe them as halves. They recognise coins and notes.
Students recognise, describe and continue patterns that increase or
decrease. Students identify length, area, volume, capacity and mass and
compare and arrange objects according to these attributes. They name the
days of the week and the seasons and they order events in a
school day, telling the time on the hour. Students use objects and pictures
to create a data display and interpret data. Students manipulate, sort and
describe 3D objects using everyday language. They manipulate, sort and
describe 2D shapes, identifying circles, squares, triangles and rectangles.
Students give and follow simple directions and describe position using
everyday language.
Science and Technology
Investigating Scientifically n Designing and Making n The Natural
Environment n The Made Environment
Students explore their immediate environment by using the senses,
questioning, sharing ideas and identifying simple causeand-effect
relationships. They identify and safely use some equipment to explore.
Students explore ideas, manipulate materials and trial designs through play
to develop products and built environments. They identify and safely use
some equipment and computer-based technology to model and make things.
Students identify and group living and non-living things and recognise the
different needs of living things. They recognise different forms of energy
and identify its use in daily life. Students
identify ways in which the environment influences daily life. They explore
the properties of both natural and made materials. Students identify ways in
which familiar products, including information products, services and built
environments meet the needs of people. They recognise the different ways
that information is sent and received and how these influence communication.
Students identify the characteristics of a range of materials used to make
commonly available products and built environments.
Human Society and Its Environment
Change and Continuity n Cultures n Environments n Social Systems and
Structures
Students identify personally significant events, places and people and
compare these with those of their peers. They use language associated with
time, change and place. Students examine characteristics common to people,
including Aboriginal peoples, describing some of the similarities and
differences. They acquire information by direct observation, talking to
others, and by viewing, reading and listening to texts. Students identify
and explore familiar natural and built environments, how to care for them
and the activities that occur in them. They communicate knowledge and
understanding orally, through writing and drawing, and by constructing
models. Students identify people's needs and explain how these are met
individually and cooperatively. They explore roles, responsibilities and
rules in the classroom and at home.
Creative Arts
Visual Arts n Music n Drama n Dance
Students make pictures and other artworks using the media and materials
given, representing both real and imagined situations. They appreciate that
artists make artworks and they begin to describe some aspects of artworks.
Students sing, play and move to a range of music. They experiment with
sounds and begin to organise them into basic structures. Students listen and
respond to a variety of music. Students engage in roles through imaginative
play and dramatic situations. They use movement, spaces and objects to
dramatise personal experiences. They respond to different forms of dramatic
experiences. Students perform dances with some control over body movement
and expression. They respond to a range of stimuli, drawing from experience
and imagination, exploring the notion that dance is about moving the body to
express ideas. Students watch dance performances and begin to recognise some
basic components of dance.
Personal Development, Health and Physical Education
Fundamental Movement and Physical Activity n Healthy Choices n Self and
Relationships
Students participate in regular physical activity through creative play,
dance, gymnastics and minor games. They practise body movement and control,
demonstrating different ways the body can move by composing and sequencing
simple movement patterns. Students show awareness and consideration of
others during play situations and practise the fundamental movement skills
of balance, sprint run, vertical jump and catch. They describe the
components of an active lifestyle and identify different ways to be active
at school and at home. Students make simple decisions in relation to health
and safety and identify
medicines and how to store them. They describe balanced eating habits and
healthy personal habits as well as safe and unsafe situations at home, on
and near roads, travelling to and from school and near water. Students
identify people who can help and describe actions such as 'no, go, tell'
that might be taken in unsafe situations. Students identify personal
characteristics and qualities, and physical changes that have occurred since
birth and identify different parts of the body. With self-control, students
express feelings and develop positive relationships. They interact and
communicate with peers in a variety of play and group situations, listening,
sharing and showing concern when working with others.
He's also wrong about what he writes. I wrote a submission to a government
inquiry on mature age workers ... many years ago.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

" Inquiry Into Older Workers: VIEW FROM AN UNPERSON- A FACE IN THE STREET"

......
Summary of main points:

I tell of my personal experiences as a mature aged unemployed unperson and
my views on unemployment including:

. depersonalisation

. social isolation and disruption

. suicide and divorce amongst mature aged unemployed

. lack of resources

. lack of real jobs available

. discrimination of various kinds

. the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer

. government prolefeed

. Bosses from Hell

. Mutual Obligation for the Australian Federal Government as described in
Article 23 of The Universal

Declaration of Human Rights

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I also included the following poem segment by a famous Aussie - Henry
Lawson.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Faces In The Street" - Henry Lawson, 1888)

They lie, the men who tell us in a loud decisive tone

That want is here a stranger, and that misery's unknown;

... I sorrow for the owners of those faces in the street. ...

I wonder would the apathy of wealthy men endure

Were all their windows level with the faces of the Poor?

Ah! Mammon's slaves, your knees shall knock, your hearts in terror beat,

When God demands a reason for the sorrows of the street,

The wrong things and the bad things

And the sad things that we meet

In the filthy lane and alley, and the cruel, heartless street. ...

That want is here a stranger, and that misery's unknown;
In the filthy lane and alley, and the cruel, heartless street. ...
(Lawson, 1984:48)

Randy:

unable to get a job as a teacher. I think he's just ticked off that

Diana:
You don't know Mark and have no right to
judge him this way.

Actually, Randy knows enough of Mark to have
every right to judge him as he has judged him.
Mark is consistently rude and hateful to (1) homeschoolers,
(2) Christians, and (3) Americans. He was rude from
the third post he made to the misc.education.home-school.christian,
and from the first post he made to misc.education.home-school.misc.
He does not debate. He asserts really *stupid* stuff, by the way
---the DIY amateur brain surgery schtick is his adaptation of
a section of a book critical of *public-school* teachers (of
public-school teachers who adopt educationist fads without
really understanding the research and all of the caveats that
go with the research), and Mark has yet to provide any
evidence whatsoever that "education" has any techne about it
that might be remotely comparable to brain surgery---
and then he simply insults as a follow-up, or battologically
repeat-posts his cut-and-paste assertions.

Diana:
When did God die and leave you the world to judge?

Personally, I'm an atheist. So I don't think God died,
to say the least. But, as for judgment, it seems to me
we humans are judging creatures. Judging the world is what
we do. Aristotle identified three dimensions to human judgment,
in fact---roughly indicated by the English words thinking,
doing, and making. And there are standards of judgment by
which we may analyze these dimensions (Truth, the Good, and
Beauty). So...the real question is where do *you* come from
telling people they should *not* be making judgments, when
making judgments is exactly what human beings have minds *for*?

You didn't like the idea that someone may know more about education (and the

I am bored by you. Most of you are very boring ... but I'm interested in

we stopped responding to him, but we still wring our hands in

I'm looking for a christian site that has considered the fact you are
home schooling your christian child, and which has put some step by
step curriculum up to that end.
I don't know of any free curriculum which meets these standards, although
there are many curriculum choices that are Christian that range from quite
inexpensive to very expensive. There is one free curriculum guide online
that is not distinctly Christian, although many Christians use it:

I would also strongly second Scott's recommendation of the following

Another great option for a free (or nearly free) education is your local

HOMESKOOL IS LIKE DIY AMATEUR SURGERY

Surgery isn't something for professionals only. Anyone can do it. It's
just carving up meat.

Us DIY surgeons don't want any government interference with our surgery.
Its our kids we are operating on and we know what's best for the little
buggers. I own my kids so I can experiment on them as I wish. I especially
like experiments using electricity, bare wires and a power socket.

Scalpel? I don't need a scalpel.

I don't need to assess or diagnose whether DIY brainsurgery is needed or
not. I like doing it and the kids turn out a whole lot better after I'm
finished. I just ask Junior "You got a headache, Junior?" or "Are you
thinking again?" and if Junior's head wobbles or Junior's head is a bit pale

Or not.

The poster (Moberator or MarkT or whatever name he's using today) seems to
feels that all education should fall under the control of the local school
system. Many homeschoolers feel that if "the system" worked properly they
would not need to homeschool, therefore why ask permission from the system
to educate outside the system.

Contacting people in the government school system may lead to an "official"
visit and all sorts of red tape.

I'd suggest contacting local homeshool groups for assistance & advise.

Yep ... just like ALL states of Australia. ;-)

Quailty control over education of children by professional educators is
important to prevent children from being brainwashed and abused by defective
DIY amateur experienters on children (aka homeskoolas).
Contacting people in the government school system may lead to an
"official" visit and all sorts of red tape.
Professional educators might find out that you are not doing such a good job
of "ejakatin" your children as youi falsely claim.

###########################################################

Would you mind if:

- nutritional products had no quality control and were basically useless and
without nutrition ... causing people to die from malnutrition
- health care had no quality control and anyone could be a doctor (including
witchdoctors), prescribe medication and do surgery ... and hospitals could
be located in the local sewers ... causing people to die by visiting a
doctor or hospital

Quality control in nutrition and health care ensures the quality of
nutrition and health care that everyone receives.

Quality control is also about ensuring quality education. This is an
essential part of state schools, Christian schools, Catholic private schools
and distance education. It is NOT an essential part (apparently) in
homeschooling.

That then begs the question: "How do you really know if your kids are
getting a quality education?" (because that in essence is what quality
control is about)

By this I mean:

How is quality education in homeschooling measured?
Does it use BOTH assessment and evaluation?
What is the criteria against which assessments are made?
Who decides the criteria?
What are their qualifications for setting such criteria?

It is of no use to assert that homeschooling is quality education without
giving any substantial verifiable proof.

By quality education I mean a minimum of a consistent liberal education with
minimum standards and criteria (e.g. literacy, basic maths, knowledge of
one's country and political systems and it's place in the world, general art
appreciation) that is available to all children regardless of socio-economic
status or the educational level of the parents.

By quality education I do not mean isolated examples of the very best
students of a system performing well. Every system has those!

Stated in plainer English, how do you really know that homeschooling is good
for ALL children? What is the verifiable evidence for your opinion?

If there is NO quality control in homeschooling, how can you ensure that you
have quality education in homeschooling?

Please explain.

The definition of "homeschooler" is based on universal attributes of
homeschoolers.

What are those attributes?

Is isolation of a child from the rest of society a part of quality
education?

Is isolation of a child from the rest of society a possibility in
homeschooling?

If it is possible, do homeschoolers value isolationism? Why?

If it is NOT possible, please explain how it is not possible with reference
to the Branch Davidians at Waco and the People's Temple at Jonestown ...both
of whom homeschooled.

Did the Branch Davidians at Waco and the People's Temple at Jonestown
provide quality education for their children?

Why are homeschoolers on misc.education.home-school.christian unable to
answer such basic questions?

food. That proves that I'm qualified to do DIY brain surgery.
Scalpel? I don't need a scalpel.
I don't need to assess or diagnose whether DIY brainsurgery is needed or
not. I like doing it and the kids turn out a whole lot better after I'm
finished. I just ask Junior "You got a headache, Junior?" or "Are you
thinking again?" and if Junior's head wobbles or Junior's head is a bit pale
I operate.
What's really neat is that you can use the leftovers for a family casserole
meal. The kids love it! Great big juicy brain blobs deep fried! Yummy!
Here we go!
Oops!
Made a mistake!
Better take them to a DIY brain surgery hospital.

Randy you could ask your board of education some resources from you state
qualified homeschools. My Grandson has been homeschooled since age five and
he loves it and so do we. I wish you well in this.
Thanks. We've found some good Christian resources, but I'd really
like to find a web site where the lessons can be completed online,
step by step.
You are most welcome. The state of Ohio furnished a computer with their
program on it and changes the program each year for the next grade level for
my Grandson and a printer. Maybe your state does the same. My Grandson is 10
now but has been homeschooled since age 5. I hope you like it as we really
love it and so does my Grandson. I wish you all the best finding something
suitable for your child and helpful for you and your wife.

Since Randy wants one that is specifically Christian oriented, I doubt

Hmm! That's neat! Regardless of the material
on the machine, and regardless of whether it
suits Randy's purpose, it seems to me that that
is a move in the right direction; the state
giving support to, but not particularly control
over, hsers. That they populate it with one
possible curricula is fine as long as it's not
overtly pro- or anti- religion. Diana, is it
a special computer that cannot be used for other
things, for example one's own typing program,
or math program? I'd guess not but it's worth
asking.

True, that'd make it fine for me. But Randy
did ask, repeatedly, for overtly Christian
material.

Well, regardless, that computer in conjunction
with whatever curricula he decides upon would
still be a plus.

Randy, if such a type of deal is open to you,
the only concern I'd voice is that you be
careful what concessions you might have to
make to Ohio (or whatever state) to get it.
I'm not excessively paranoid (says me) guy
and realize that not all states and localities
are hostile toward hsing. But some do seem
to be, according to too many accounts for me
to disregard. Be sure that you're not signing
away freedoms you don't mind having removed.
For example, if the schools get the right to
evaluate your child and move him/her into
school system if they're not happy with the
results, I would not touch the deal with a
10 foot pole. (As a matter of fact, I'd get
vocal about it to both the schools and to any
hsers in the affected area. Hsers are a
particularly politically acute group, and
there's a need to stay so.)

God bless your family and your efforts at
caring for them. Let us know how things go,
eh? _________________________________Marty

You need to check the newsgroup, as most people will post messages
there....I think that it is against newsgroup protocol or whatever to email
answers, as others who might find the information useful are then unable to
benefit from it.

Anyway......

I would highly recommend a curriculum called Five in a Row
(www.fiveinrow.com ).
It is a literature-based unit study approach that I used with both of my
girls. It is simplistic....you read the same story for five days, and do
activities relating to the story each day. For example, you might read How
To Make An Apple Pie and See The World, and on Monday you might locate each
country in the story on the map, make the countries' flags, and learn some
customs, language, etc. from each country. The second day you might learn
about literary devices such as onomatopoeia, or alliteration, or what have
you. Don't be put off by it's simplicity: my children learned more during
those years than I ever would have thought, and they have *retained* it to
this day. It lit a fire (fiar, fire...get it?? ;>D) for learning in them
that drier curriculum choices might have quenched. I cannot speak highly
enough about this curriculum.

Another choice we loved was a book called Early Education at Home by Jean M.
Soyke (http://www.bookpeddler.us/Home_Education/Page_1/2192.html) . It was
gentle, had lots of helpful teaching information for the parent, and comes
from a Christian perspective. We got lots of really good ideas from this
book, and I am convinced that some of the letter games we played from this
book helped my younger daughter finally learn her letters (we are finding
that she has processing issues).

Both of these books can be found online new at around 20.00 per book (FIAR
comes in three volumes that can be used in any order, from k-about 3rd
grade) and if you buy them used, they are cheaper still. If, like my
library, your library carries these books, you can use them for free!

Kindergarten is about lighting the fire, so to speak....and as such, it
should be engaging and fun for the child...a special time between the parent
and child as the child begins to learn more about their world! If I had one
word to give you as advice, it would be ENJOY. If I only had two words,
they would be DON'T RUSH. They are only little for such a little
while....the days are long, but the years FLY by.

Enjoy your kindergarten year!

My e-mail client lets me post to the group and e-mail someone at the
same time. Or you can do both.
Yes. It's not that it's against any "rules"
or anything, but there's the issue of not
letting the group into a conversation that
used to be public. That's a loss for the
public who would be interested in the info.
Of course, there are times when it's *more*
than appropriate to "take it to email".

The issue with emailing *also* is a more
individual one. There are times when I
cannot get to the group for a while, so I
appreciate the few people who reply also
by email. That's why I, by default, do
this. On the otherhand there are people
who find it unnecessary, annoying or
downright rude to be emailed. While I
don't quite understand the latter extreme,
it's quite easy to accomodate those who
say, or cuss, "Don't email me". Occasionally
I forget, and that's a bit of a problem,
but overall it seems to work.

Welcome to the group. I don't have any
particular curricula suggestions, but I
do have two observations which might be
of use.

The younger children, certainly at the K
level, are much better equipped to learn
by observation and experience, than by
curricula. So time spent out of doors,
sitting in the grass watching the bugs,
or at the pond feeding the birds, or
collecting all the different kinds of
leaves, or cuddled in a sleeping bag
watching the stars with you, etc. is going
to be very productive. Time spent trying
to force reading skills before they're
ready is *not*.

Also: Consider the ill effects of your
child having too much book and your lap
time. Are there any ill effects? Then
why not do it *more*? Especially with
the Bible, but also with all sorts of
books.

Remember the saying, "Give a person a
fish and he eats for a day. *Teach* a
person to fish and he eats for a
lifetime."? I think the reading equivelant
is, "Just teach a child to read and he'll
read his assignments. Teach a child to
*love* reading and he'll read *everything*."
Reading to your child at every opportunity
is where it's at.

Randy,

Don't undervalue what Marty wrote there. Reading to your child when young
is *the most important thing you could be doing*. I feel ashamed that I
didn't mention it before. The assumption is that you've been doing this
with your child already (since the age of ~1 or so?). In that respect,
homeschooling is no more than a continuation of what you've already been
doing.

Note that WHAT you read isn't that important (on a relative scale).

"We can, but that doesn't turn a cesspool into a rose garden."

Also: Consider the ill effects of your
child having too much book and your lap
time. Are there any ill effects? Then
why not do it *more*? Especially with
the Bible, but also with all sorts of
books.
Remember the saying, "Give a person a
fish and he eats for a day. *Teach* a
person to fish and he eats for a
lifetime."? I think the reading equivelant
is, "Just teach a child to read and he'll
read his assignments. Teach a child to
*love* reading and he'll read *everything*."
Reading to your child at every opportunity
is where it's at.
Randy,
Don't undervalue what Marty wrote there. Reading to your child when young
is *the most important thing you could be doing*. I feel ashamed that I
didn't mention it before. The assumption is that you've been doing this
with your child already (since the age of ~1 or so?). In that respect,
homeschooling is no more than a continuation of what you've already been
doing.
Note that WHAT you read isn't that important (on a relative scale).
Thanks
